How to Choose the Perfect Suitcase

An item to pack your earthly possessions in as you embark on an adventure!

Suitcases are synonymous with travel. Every traveller is different in terms of what they look for in a suitcase. Some even opt for backpacks rather than a suitcase.

Here’s 5 things to consider when picking a suitcase

SIZE

Every airline has a different weight allowance for checked baggage depending on the flight.

Checked baggage generally comes in medium or large size (total dimensions no more than 140 to 150cm). Important to keep in mind it’s the weight that counts unless you have an oversized item e.g. more than 100cm on one side.

Cabin baggage comes in a small size but can also be checked in if you need. Most airlines allow for one overhead piece and one under the seat in front of you. Again it’s the weight that counts. My favourite cabin baggage is the Cabin Zero 44L backpack. It’s sleek, it’s light, about the size of a traditional carry on luggage and actually fits enough clothes for a 3 week overseas trip. The main zipper section opens up like a traditional case making it easy to get stuff in and out off as well.

Take home is there will generally be small, medium and large size cases so pick a size for check in that suits your requirements and ability to manoeuvre. Plus always check airline allowance.

Recommend a medium to large size for check in and small for carry on. A backpack the size of a traditional carry on luggage is my preferred as it keeps your hands free for getting tickets/passports out and pushing your check in luggage if you bring one.

HARD OR SOFT CASE / OUTER

A very personal choice! Main differences…

  • With a hard case, it keeps things secure and from breaks although not as flexible with adding more items in as its a fixed size.
  • With soft case, a bit more flexible if you want to add that extra top or shoes, however can get squished easily especially when checked in.

Recommend either depending on personal preference for check in and a soft for carry on (or see my recommendation regarding carry on pack).

2 OR 4 WHEELS

Having used both…

2 wheels only allow for pulling the case but they usually sit relatively tucked into the base of the case.

4 wheels allow for pushing which is more ergonomic than the traditional pulling, although the wheels can stick out.

Recommend a 4 wheel case for ease of use.

DURABILITY

The durability of an item will depend on use and handling. A good indication of how durable an item is expected to be is the reputation of brand and warranty. Reviews online also provide a good indication.

Recommend a reputable brand e.g. Samsonite or Antler with a decent warranty.

ZIPPERS

Not all zippers are created equal. Big zippers are good. If you can get YKK, you’ve hit the holy grail! (The Cabin Zero pack has YKK zippers)

Look for two zippers which join together. If one breaks you can still use the other to secure your case.

Make sure the zipper has pull loops which you can put a lock on or which attaches to a lock on case.

Recommend testing the zippers out before buying a case or looking at manufacturer website on how big the zip is in relation to the bag.
